Biographical Information
As Associate Dean for Student Life, Registrar and Associate Professor of Biblical Greek, Mary (Polly) Coote wears several hats at San Francisco Theological Seminary. However, the one she is perhaps most affectionately known for is the brown paper sack rolled into elegantly humble headgear Coote wears when leading the SFTS faculty in formal processions. Ever down to earth, Coote's unusual academic dress reflects a playful and grace-filled spirit that infuses her teaching and role as registrar. "I'm like a travel agent," Coote said, "Students want to get from Point A to Point B, Point B being a degree from SFTS. I help them plan the trip." Coote's own journey to SFTS started with a PhD from Harvard University in South Slavic Literature and mastery of Latin, French, German, Russian, Serbian Croatian, and of course Biblical Greek. Before arriving at SFTS as assistant to the registrar in 1980, Coote served as an Assistant Professor of Slavic Languages at University of California, Berkeley, for seven years. Coote co-wrote Power, Politics and the Making of the Bible with her husband, Robert Coote, SFTS Senior Research Professor. Coote loves teaching Greek. "I want students to make friends with the language, so they won't completely give it up once they finish the class, but continue to savor the discovery of its ambiguities. I can't believe they pay me to have so much fun."
