Biographical Information "Seminary is the perfect place for me," says Judy Yates Siker, Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins and ordained minister of Word and Sacrament. "Where else could I have the privilege of engaging three of my great loves: teaching, grappling with the biblical text and making it relevant for today's church?" These interests are apparent in her work both inside and outside SFTS. In addition to teaching at SFTS, Siker has taught at the American Baptist Seminary of the West, Meredith College, a small liberal arts college for women, Loyola Marymount University, a midsize university, and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a major research university. "I've wanted to be a teacher since I sat in Miss Douglas' first-grade class," Siker said. "It's such a privilege to be with people of any age or discipline while they are discovering new ideas." Weekends find her preaching, teaching or leading spiritual retreats for churches (Presbyterian and others) throughout California. Another major interest for Siker is Jewish/Christian relations. From July 2008 through July 2009, she was a fellow of the Christian Leadership Initiative, sponsored by the Shalom Hartman Institute of Jerusalem and the American Jewish Committee. She and the 11 other fellows of the program studied and dialogued with professors from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, as well as professors and rabbis from across Israel about the central issue of Jewish ethics and faith. "Christian scriptures have been misused and abused over the centuries in ways that have done untold harm, and it is imperative that we theological educators address these issues."
