Service and Involvement with Church or Denomination

While attending West Valley Presbyterian Church, I was invloved in the music program. I also facilitated a seminar concerning mental illness. The purpose of the seminar was to educate parishioners about mental illness and hopefully begin a program at that church that might grow into the Presbyterian Church as a whole. It was very well received.

Housing Needs

I would stay in the apartment that I live in now.

Limitations

I would need to serve a chaplaincy in the Marin/Contra Costa County area to be able to keep commitments I have here. I will also plan to live in my current apartment.

Self Introduction

I am a second career seminary student.
I have worked in several positions always having something to do with individuals that have some sort of challenge or disability ranging from the homeless to students with special needs at the high school level.
My heart for ministry is in working with the mentally ill, their families and their churches. Experience has demonstarted to me that their is a great need for chaplains that are willing and able to minister to this population.

Learning Goals & Areas of Responsibility Desired

My learning goals are more about how to minister to individuals rather than working in a parish setting. I will be taking some classes in January/ spring 2010 that are geared toward chaplaincy work. Upon completion of those classes, I will have a better idea what else I will need to study.

Other Helpful Information

I have a great deal of compassion for the mentally ill and their families. I would like to put that compassion to work in practical ways. I have known some chaplains that were very good but most were disappointing. I believe I can minister in a unique fashion to these folks.
