Self Introduction |
| |
|
|
I was born and raised in the Philippines. While in the Philippines, my family and I attended the Ellinwood-Malate Church, one of the flagship churches of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines.
Before responding to God's call, I worked for a Philippine nutrition agency, a couple of public information and advertising agencies, an international voluntary agency involved in the resettlement of IndoChinese refugees, taught ESL at one of the biggest non-profit agencies in NYC, served with a Texas-based fair trade organization (now defunct), and did research and administrative support for the California Medical Association.
My initial foray into ministry as I was discerning my call was a one-year stint with Purple Pomegranate, the publishing arm of a messianic Jewish ministry based in San Francisco.
My theology of vocation and ministry seeks a balance between gospel proclamation and social concerns; it also embraces the dialectical tension present in the individual/communal personality of the church as well as the personal/communal character of God's salvific and reconciliatory action in human history.
I understand the calling of the church as intrinsically related to an unashamed witness to the redemptive work of God in Christ - even, and perhaps more so, in the secular and pluralist environment that we find ourselves. While respecting and acknowledging the presence of other religious traditions I believe that I am called, at the same time, to advance and articulate the historic understanding of the Church that the Christian faith possesses features and truth claims that differentiate and distinguish it from the others.
