SFTS Forms Degree Partnership with McCormick Seminary

Through an agreement between two of North America’s most historic seminaries, San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) and the Chicago-based McCormick Theological Seminary, both schools will now make their Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) elective classes available to students from both universities. This will immediately increase the number and breadth of courses available to SFTS D.Min. students, and allow for increased customization of the degree program.

Under the plan, students enrolled in Advanced Pastoral Studies/D.Min. programs at these two PC (USA) seminaries will be able to take elective courses at either institution for full credit toward their degrees. SFTS currently offers D.Min. concentrations in the following areas: multidisciplinary studies, pastoral care and counseling, pastors as spiritual leaders, and pastoral leadership. Through this agreement, SFTS students will now be able to pursue coursework in parish revitalization, building beloved community, and pastoral and spiritual care.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to not only expand the courses available to SFTS students, but also to build a partnership with another Presbyterian seminary that allows us both to better serve our students, the church, and the community,” said Rev. Dr. James McDonald, president of SFTS.

Tuition and fees for courses offered through this program, will be charged and retained at the school in which the student is enrolled as a degree candidate.

FAQs

Who is eligible to participate in this program?
Cross-registration is open to all students in good standing in their respective D.Min. programs at San Francisco or McCormick seminaries.

How will students know which courses offered by the partner schools will be available to them?
Each school will inform its own students about both its own elective courses and courses available at
the partner school.

What will the registration process be?
Students wishing to enroll in a course in the partner institution should seek permission from their (degree-granting) institutional dean or program director. Once permission is received, students will register for the course through the established registration procedure of their school. No separate or new application will be required.

What course will be available to students from the other seminary?
This agreement involves elective courses only at MTS and SFTS. Elective courses are offered at SFTS during summer sessions, and at MTS during May, June, and occasionally in January. Ordinarily, students will not satisfy core or foundational course requirements through this arrangement. Exceptions may be allowed by mutual agreement of both program directors. This agreement does not apply to courses offered in a cluster to which the host school may belong.

The schedules for courses at the two institutions are slightly different. What amount of credit will be received for courses? Although the two institutions differ in course format (three full-day and two half-day sessions plus contact before, during, and after the class for McCormick; 3 hours/day for 10 days plus the possibility of some additional contact for SFTS students), each school will accept the format of the other for equivalent course credit.

What grading system will be used?
Students will be expected to fulfill all the stated requirements of the course. While McCormick uses a letter grade system and SFTS a “pass/fail” system, both will accept the system used by the partner institution. Students enrolled in a McCormick course will receive a letter grade; students taking an SFTS course will receive a pass or no pass grade.

What is the tuition cost for a course at the partner school?
Students will pay the tuition rate charged by their school of matriculation for a cross-registered course. Registration, billing, and student payment will remain with the school of matriculation.

Are there any limits or caps on what courses I can take?
In the case of limited-enrollment courses, either seminary may cap the total number of students, and the total number of cross-registered students, capable of being enrolled in any course according to its own policies and practices.

What about financial aid?
Students making use of this opportunity will not be eligible for financial aid from the partner institution. A student’s school of matriculation will follow its usual policies for determining whether a student can receive aid for a cross-registered course.

Will housing be available for cross-registered students?
Housing and meal plans will be made available to students of both institutions at the same rates charged to students of the course-providing institution.
