SFTS Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction is Celebrating 20 Years!

Accepting Applications Now through October 15

2015 Program Dates: Sunday, January 4 - Friday, January 23

Through September 15, San Francisco Theological Seminary is accepting applications for its 21st class in the Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction (DASD) program, which begins with the 2014 January Term. Twenty years ago, SFTS was one of the first Protestant seminaries in the country to offer this innovative program, which provides students with the tools to enable individuals, groups and organizations to identify and respond to God’s call. As students grow in the art of listening, discernment, and spiritual direction, they gain invaluable experience applicable in every ministry setting, whether that is in a church, hospital, or coffee shop.

Why SFTS?

What Graduates are Saying:

Ineda Adesanya, a 2013 DASD graduate and senior M.Div. student, finds contemplative listening and the discernment of God’s will extremely important in helping individuals see and follow the path God has laid out for them. Additionally, her studies have “helped me to better recognize God moving in my life, and I have developed this weird, inexplicable, ever-present joy [because of it].” A current Minister of Spiritual Life at Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, Adesanya looks forward to establishing her own full-service spiritual direction practice, with particular focus on providing spiritual care for pastors.

Ken Shigematsu, a 2008 DASD and 2013 D.Min. graduate, says “The courses [in Spiritual Direction] offered me far more than instruction in spiritual direction and prayer. The chapels, the guided prayer exercises, and the spiritual direction simulations ushered me into a space where I felt held in a place of belovedness by God. I was so moved by the program that I enrolled in the D.Min. program at SFTS.” Shigematsu is currently the senior pastor of Tenth Avenue Alliance Church in Vancouver, Canada.
