Welcome to the Program in
Christian Spirituality at SFTS

What makes a fire burn,
is space between the logs,
a breathing space.
-- Judy Brown

Here at the Program in Christian Spirituality, building "open spaces" is a guiding theme for us in our work -

  • Spaces in time and relationships where we may pay attention to the presence of God's Spirit within our ordinary, everyday living

  • Spaces in which the Spirit may breathe new life and fire into human hearts, church leadership, and congregations

  • Open spaces within systems and structures of human society in which the Spirit of Christ may move with healing and justice.

If you have a desire to work with the Spirit in building such "open spaces" for your life, faith, and ministry then you may also be drawn to any of the several programs offered by the PCS. These include diploma programs in spiritual direction and spiritual formation; a Doctor of Ministry in Spirituality; Doctor of Ministry with an emphasis on The Pastor as Spiritual Leader; a spirituality concentration in the MDiv program; pastoral renewal opportunities; as well as events for the larger community. I encourage you to explore our web site to learn more about us—and I also invite to contact me personally at vhawkins@sfts.edu or by calling me at 415.451.2816.

Come join us at SFTS and allow the Spirit to open your mind, stretch your heart, and transform your ministry. Join us in this ministry of building "open spaces" in individuals, congregations, and communities—so that "the flame/that knows just how it wants to burn/can find its way."

Wishing you both the fire and the fruit of Christ's Spirit,

What makes a fire burn
is space between the logs,
a breathing space.
Too much of a good thing,
too many logs
packed too tight
can douse the flames
almost as surely
as a pail of water would.

So building fires
requires attention
to the spaces in between,
as much as to the wood.

When we are able to build
open spaces
in the same way
we have learned
to pile on the logs,
then we can come to see how
it is fuel, and absence of the fuel
together, that make fire possible.

We only need to lay a log
lightly from time to time.
A fire
simply because the space is there,
with openings
in which the flame
that knows just how it wants to burn
can find its way.
