Ministry Opportunity Description

     
Patient Care:
 Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary hospice care team.
 Assesses the patient’s and family’s initial and ongoing spiritual strengths and needs to alleviate spiritual suffering.
 Provides comfort and peace through the use of prayer, meditation, guided visualization, complementary therapies, spiritual/pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, music, and appropriate rites/rituals, as needed.
 Arranges for community clergy assistance, when appropriate.
 Treats all patients/families, religious or nonreligious, without judgment or bias, helping them to review the meaning of their lives and to find a meaningful spiritual expression in their experience of loss.
 Contributes spiritual expertise in the development and updating of patient Plans of Care.
 Assists with planning and officiating at the patient’s funeral, memorial, or burial service at the patient’s or family’s request.
 Charts clearly, accurately, in a timely manner, and in accordance with the patient’s Plan of Care.
 Does not proselytize, convert, save souls, or behave in any way that disrespects the patient’s and families spiritual or religious belief system.

Administration:
 Assists as a spiritual leader and resource for staff and volunteers.
 Remains current on matters of chaplaincy, spirituality, and religion through continuing education, professional organizations, etc.
 Serves on various internal committees.
 Meets all timelines.
 Assists with other organizational needs, as required.

Community Outreach:
 Helps plan and participates in community outreach programs, such as being part of the Speaker’s Bureau, leading workshops offered to the community, and serving on the appropriate panels or boards.
 Maintains effective working relationships with spiritual and/or religious organizations for coordinating patient and family spiritual care, and for maintaining the organization’s visibility in the community.
