Young Adult Minister
First Congregational Church, Berkeley, CA

Status: 32hrs per week salaried position with benefits
Reports to: Patricia DeJong, Senior Minister


FCCB is a large congregation of the United Church Of Christ located in the city of Berkeley, CA, a colorful and diverse college town immediately across the bay from San Francisco. There are approximately 500 members of the congregation serving a community closely linked to both the University of California, Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union.

The Young Adult Minister promotes, nurtures and grows the young adult ministries at FCCB, and plays an active role in the worship and program life of the church. It is the objective of this position to build on current ministry structures within the church to effectively reach, build up and minister to those in the life stages of college, graduate and professional school, singles, engaged couples, young marrieds, and young families through regular meetings, activities and retreats.


• Assess, plan and fully execute programs that serve the most current and relevant needs and interests of young adults.

• Train, nurture and support lay leaders in the development of small groups to provide spiritual growth and community for young adults who are unable, or uninterested, in regularly attending formal services and activities in a church building.

• Encourage young adult participation in all church activities. Foster inter-generational relationships.

• Provide pastoral care for young adults; meet them where they are emotionally/spiritually and physically (i.e., meet them on their lunch break from work, at a coffee shop, etc.).

• Extend a weekly welcome to new and returning young adults in the community through a variety of ways including social media.

• Ensure that the Café Ministry runs smoothly and provides a place for young adults to meet and interact with one another and other church members.

• Plan and lead First Church worship services in collaboration with the Worship Team. Develop and maintain Worship Team Google Documents.


• Demonstrated proficiency providing pastoral care and maintaining confidentiality.

• Ability to provide spirit-filled worship leadership with confidence and presence.

• Excellent communication and networking skills.

• Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with colleagues.

• Proven ability to develop and build programs.

• Effectiveness employing primary modes of communication/technology used by young adults (i.e. social networking applications).

• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on needs of the church and program.

• Understanding and acceptance that young adults are often in transition and programs may need to be reshaped as often as the demographics of the group change.

• Understanding of how to focus ministry on specific, selected segments of the young adult population by creating profiles and targeting programs to meet those individuals’ unique needs.

• Bachelors degree required, Master of Divinity preferred. Ordination preferred, but not mandatory. 5+ years experience working successfully with a young adult population.5+ years experience leading worship and providing pastoral care. Basic MS Office skills. Connection to the University of California or understanding of how large, public universities function is a plus.
