Rev. Jana Childers comes to her new position at the GST having served its predecessor institution, San Francisco Theological Seminary, for more than thirty years. A long-time professor of Homiletics, Childers has authored and edited numerous books and articles on the art of preaching. Her research focuses on performance theory and its application to preaching and worship leadership, the creative process, early twentieth century Pentecostal preachers, and women’s experience in preaching.
Childers became dean of the GST at its inception on July 1, 2019. Prior to her work at SFTS, Childers pastored congregations in New Jersey and Kansas. She has taught as adjunct and visiting professors at Princeton Theological Seminary, McCormick Theological Seminary, United Theological College (Charles Sturt University) in Parramatta, Australia and the Center for Theology and Ministry in Melbourne, Australia. Childers earned her B.A. from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, her M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and her Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union (in cooperation with the University of California, Berkeley) in Berkeley, California.
