LENTEN DEVOTION: LISTEN TO THE QUIET

Listen to the Quiet
Mark 15:37-47

With a loud cry, he breathed his last.
And the temple curtain tore in two.
And the centurion, who saw it all, confessed,
“Surely, this man is the Son of God.”

And, then:  Listen to the quiet.

Listen to the quiet as the women wait.

Listen to the quiet as Joseph takes the body down.

Listen to the quiet as they wash and wrap and weep.

Listen to the quiet after the stone rolls into place.

Listen to the quiet
when the women who have stayed
go
because there is nothing left to see, or hear, or do.

Listen to the quiet of the day between.

Listen to the quiet of Sabbath.

Listen to the quiet of a second lonesome night.

Listen to the quiet of the deep dawn of the third day
as the women stir from sleep
and set out on their way.

Listen to the quiet in between and all around and just before
