Remembering Rev. Dr. James Emerson

San Francisco Theological Seminary extends its sympathy to the family and colleagues of Rev. Dr. James G. Emerson, former SFTS Interim President (2000-2002) and a past member of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Emerson, the long-time pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, served the Seminary in a number of ways, and in crucial times. A scholar-practitioner in the area of Pastoral Counseling and a talented administrator, he was perhaps best known for his great pastor’s heart and extraordinary gift for empathy. He was featured in SFTS' Chimes magazine several times, including a lovely 2015 tribute to his lifelong service to the community.

Jim held degrees from Stanford University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Chicago. Before coming to San Francisco, he served churches in Philadephia, the New York metropolitan area, Indianapolis, and Denver. His wife Margaret (Migs) Bonnell passed away a number of years ago; sons John and Jed and daughter Lynn will appreciate your prayers.

Memorial services will be held at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco on October 20, 2018 at 1:00pm. All are welcome.

"It’s impossible to calculate the number of lives that Jim Emerson touched. As a minister, author, counselor, and friend, he had one of the largest pastoral hearts I have ever known. He lived with a deep awareness of the joy and suffering that life can bring, helping others celebrate the good and wondrous, and find solace in times of pain and sorrow. We give thanks for his life and ministry, and for his wise leadership of San Francisco Theological Seminary as he steered the school through a rough patch in its history as interim president. We extend our profound condolences to his family."
